The Beer League is a recreational basketball league that is run every Friday night at Wodson Park Sports Centre, Ware, Hertfordshire.
The Beer League has been in existence at Wodson Park since 1989, and at John Warner School, Hoddesdon, for the ten years before that date.
The key to it’s success and longevity is, as the name suggests, it’s informality. The concept is very simple, i.e. that adults and older teenagers, of either sex, can just turn up, and play basketball, on most Friday evenings and at a reasonable cost. Teams can be mixed, but female players score DOUBLE !
Costs are kept to a minimum, mainly because each game is controlled by just ONE referee, who also doubles up at the timekeeper and visual scorer. There is no scoresheet, the clock is running (2 x 25 minutes), and no records of results are kept. There are currently NINE teams in the league, and there are four games each Friday. Therefore, each team gets one week off in every eight weeks. Fixtures are published on the Wodson Park notice boards and website every four weeks.
