Television Work

Roy Birch has worked for Eurosport ever since the inception of Sky TV, and has covered over 200 live games since the early 1990's.

Highlights include the Dream Team campaign of 1992, World and European Championships, and Euroleague and Uleb Cup competitions. As a measure of Eurosport's determination to show basketball in it's true light as a major world sport, Eurosport 2 broadcast 65 Uleb cup matches, LIVE, last season, and has scheduled a repeat for the season 2006-07.

In an incredible Final, in April, 2006, Roy and Co-Commentator Micky Bett experienced the incredible atmosphere that Greek fans create when Eurosport 2 was LIVE, at the Final, in Charleroi, Belgium. Amazingly, Roy nearly missed the game, because of a problem with Eurostar, and he had to use all of his resources to get to the Belgian town just before tip off ..... a 200 euro taxi drive from Lille, in France, was the last stage of his journey !

"But it was worth the aggravation,", said Roy, "because the atmosphere in the Final, contested between Aris Salonika and Dynamo Moscow, was something that I have never experienced before in nearly 50 years of involvement in basketball ........ and Aris LOST !!"

The Uleb Cup tips off again, on Eurosport 2, on October 31st, and the mighty REAL MADRID will start as favourites to make the Final, once again, in Charleroi, in April 2007 !

Apart from Eurosport, Roy has worked for UKTV, covering, again live, the Euroleague Semis and Final, from Prague , and it was certainly a good year for the Russians, as CSKA Moscow ran out winners against Maccabi Tel Aviv.

Roy's biggest TV audience is in Africa, as he also works for Canal France International, but not doing just basketball: Every August, after the Ware Camp, Roy has had assignments for CFI, including the Athens Olympic Track & Field programme (every single event !), the World Athletics Championships, African Nations Football, and, every two years, the African Basketball championships.
